A Workshop and Retreat Center in Southern New Hampshire Accommodations Built in 1820, The Story House was originally owned by Dolly Everett, the first schoolteacher in New Ipswich. The one room schoolhouse still stands across Main Street, a street of 18th and 19th century homes and mature trees. Just down the street is the Barrett House, a stately mansion built in 1800 that is now a museum. (www.historicnewengland.org/visit/homes/barrett.htm) A charming federal-style colonial, The Story House has two front parlors, dining room, kitchen, sitting room, four large bedrooms (each with twin beds), two full bathrooms, and a large screened porch. Pine floors and fireplaces throughout lend warmth and charm. A stream runs through the back yard. Food Workshops and retreats include healthy home-style cooking. Tutorial/ coaching sessions include breakfast and dinner. Amenities Wi-Fi; Susan’s library of folktale books; comfortable nooks and crannies to sit and read; coffee, tea, fruit, and cookies available all day and evening The Region The Story House is located at 121 Main Street in New Ipswich, New Hampshire, just north of the Massachusetts border, and in the heart of the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. This mountainous part of southern New Hampshire remains heavily forested and is dotted with many small towns that retain their 19th century character. Most visitors come here for the natural beauty, with its numerous hiking trails and state parks. Henry David Thoreau is said to have climbed Mount Monadnock, the mountain that dominates the 5,000 acres Monadnock State Park with its forty miles of hiking trails. It is said to be the second most hiked mountain in the world, after Mt. Fuji. Just a few miles away from The Story House, The Cathedral of the Pines is a breathtaking vista of Mount Monadnock with a sacred place for worship nestled in the pine trees. Peterborough is located about ten miles away where there are several fine restaurants and the Sharon Arts Center, an exquisite crafts gallery. The last woolen mill in New Hampshire still operates in Harrisville and offers weaving classes. Visitors to the region enjoy the many antique shops, while farmers’ markets, music, and theater enliven the region in the summer. Nearby Bed and Breakfast Accommodations The Story House can accommodate eight guests. Overflow and participants who prefer a private room can opt to stay at one of several bed and breakfasts within nine miles of The Story House. Fees will be reduced for those who stay elsewhere. These three inns were built in the late 1700 or early 1800’s and are filled with charm and warm hospitality. The Birchwood Inn (6 miles away) www.thebirchwoodinn.com Three Maples (6.4 miles away) www.threemaples.com The Apple Gate Bed and Breakfast (8.7 miles away) www.applegatenh.com There are many other places to stay in the area as well.
