DATES FOR SUMMER 2008
For twenty years Susan Danoff has offered five-day intensive workshops in the art of storytelling at Princeton University. The institute is a weeklong storytelling workshop designed for educators who would like to learn to tell stories with confidence, ease, and the joy of sharing. Participants from related fields are also welcome to attend.
During the week each participant will learn to tell a folktale of his/her choice. In the mornings we will work with the story through movement, character, voice, image, and spirit. We will also discuss issues that arise when we begin to share our stories: how we set the tone for our stories; how we discover the sense of wonder that compels teller and listener alike; how we reveal our understanding through silence and gesture as well as words.
In the afternoon workshops we will explore other aspects of storytelling such as exploring the links between storytelling and writing, understanding the connections between storytelling and emergent literacy, considering storytelling as cultural expression, and finding ways to express story through visual arts. Throughout the workshop we will discuss the relevance and application of storytelling to education.
DATES June 30 – July 3: Workshops run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with a break for lunch. On Thursday, July 3rd, the day will begin at 9:00 am and end at 7:30 pm and will include a buffet dinner followed by a final wrap-up session. Workshops usually run five days, but this year the first institute has been shortened to four because July 4th falls on Friday.
Tuition: $400
July 13th – 18th (Residential option) Participants who choose to stay in the dormitory will check in on Sunday afternoon, July 13th. The workshop will begin Sunday evening July 13th and end on Friday evening, July 18th at 7:30 pm. Workshops will run from 9:00 – 4:00 each day, with a break for lunch, and there will be evening programs every day except Thursday.

TUITION: The tuition for the four-day institute (June 30-July 3) is $400 and for the five-day institute (July 13 – 18) is $500. This does not include room and board. The balance and the dorm fee will be due by June 1, 2008.
ROOM FEE: The room fee for five nights (Sunday through Thursday) is $221.25. (Some participants like to leave Friday night after the last session ends at 7:30 pm.) The fee for six nights (Sunday through Friday) is $265.50. (Some participants prefer to leave on Saturday morning.) The dorm is air-conditioned, and each suite of two single rooms has an adjoining shared bathroom. This is a dormitory, not a hotel room, and is sparsely furnished with a bed and desk. Linens are provided.
MEALS: Based upon prior experience, we do not offer a meal plan at Princeton. Instead we recommend that participants buy meals as they go. Frist Campus Center is open for breakfast and lunch and does not require a meal plan, and participants may eat dinner in the town of Princeton where they will find many small restaurants.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: In order to be accepted into the program, applicants are required to pay a $250 nonrefundable deposit. The fee will be returned if, for any reason, the applicant is not admitted into the program. Each workshop is limited to fifteen people, and participants are required to attend for the entire week. Applicants are requested to write a letter describing their teaching background and interest in storytelling along with the registration form and fee. Participants who are not educators will be considered if there are openings.
CREDIT: Susan Danoff is a Professional Development Provider on the New Jersey Department of Education Professional Development Provider Registration System. At the end of the workshop, participants will be given a certificate for 24 hours in the nonresidential program and for 35 hours in the residential program.
DISABILITIES: The Princeton University campus is completely accessible to people with disabilities. Participants, especially those in the residential program, should understand that the campus is large, and participants walk considerable distances between dorms, meeting spaces, and eating facilities. What former participants have said… Susan Danoff’s storytelling institute stands out from my experience with professional development as the most powerful and illuminating course that I have ever taken. Indeed, it has shifted the way that I think about language and making meaning with language. -Jennifer Rowell, Assistant Professor of English Education, Rutgers Graduate School of Education Susan Danoff’s methods and techniques were superb. Her pace was appropriate, her own stories fascinating and expertly told, her activities relevant. Like many teachers in my position, I have been to numerous workshops, but I have never left a workshop with so many vivid memories of the meaningfulness of the work we did.-Paul Epply-Schmidt, Middle School History and English teacher, Princeton Day School The time I spent this past summer with Susan Danoff and a wonderfully open and kind group of educators has truly opened new avenues to me in my teaching. I have been a teacher for five years and can honestly say that no other course or seminar has done as much for my teaching and communication with students as this one has. It was like attending a gymnastics course for the mind and soul. I now approach my entire day with the children, aware of the mighty powers of the story, of verbal illustration using personal stories and folktales from around the globe.-Patricia Negron, 2nd grade teacher, Kenderton Elementary School, Philadelphia Susan modeled exactly what she taught. I learned so much about teaching just by watching her present such a well planned, varied, and interesting experience. Her style is quiet, but her knowledge and compassion and ability to tune into the individuals in the group made it all flow smoothly. Each day was packed with useful information and activities that generated deep thinking. Through movement and guided image meditations, we were able to be totally immersed in all aspects of our stories. Unlike many workshops, this experience left me wanting more.-Arlene Milgram, art teacher, Montgomery School District During the last 28 years I have attended many classes, seminars, and workshops. The Storytelling Institute is something very special. Susan Danoff’s spirit changes the lives of teachers and students. The weeklong institute works and inspires because it is built upon research on multiple intelligences and studies on the impact of the arts on learning. It is a working seminar in which teachers master skills, engage in professional dialogue and create a vision of what is possible when teaching with the arts. -Dorothy Kohrherr, middle school humanities teacher, South Brunswick Township |
